Deep beneath the temple of Amun lay a labyrinth of passages and chambers. The High Priestess hurried through the echoing corridors to a particular chamber accessed only by those with ‘the power.’ She heard the call in her head even above the sound of her footsteps on the stone flags. Their whispers were drawing her to them, and she would not resist.

Egypt of the Pharaohs, is a time and place we all have firmly in our minds but in my own mind, that great river with its mysterious ruins was not peopled until I read this book. I love the way Hart persuaded me that her characters really did live. Not my usual territory in many ways so the fact that I stayed involved and read it all the way to the end is an endorsement of the writing.
